After you have downloaded and installed the Panama map, the next step is to send the map to your GPS device. There are 2 popular software applications that can send the Panama map to your GPS unit. Garmin Mapsource can display the Panama map on your PC and is capable of sending the map to a Garmin GPS device. Also Mapsource can download saved waypoint and track data to and from the GPS unit. Sendmap20 This is a free utility that can send Garmin format maps to your Garmin device. This is the simplest method to get the map from your PC to the GPS device. Sendmap20 can't display the map on your PC, it is a sending utility only.

What Model GPS to buy?

Minimize

The Panama GPS map will only run on Garmin compatible devices. It will not run on TomTom, Magellan, Sony or other non-Garmin devices.

In-Car Navigation
For normal in-car navigation we suggest a Garmin Nuvi. The model to buy will depend on your budget.

Handhelds
For off-road and outdoors use we suggest a Garmin Colorado/Oregon or GPSMAP 60 series. The map will also run on the eTrex range but some models have only 24 MB of memory and you won't be able to load the Panama Street Map and the Panama Topo together. We also suggest that you purchase a USB compatible device. Some cheaper models only have a serial port to upload the maps. Serial ports are considerably slower than USB and some laptop PC's don't have serial ports anymore.

Pocket PC's and Phones
Garmin Mobile XT is a software program available from Garmin that will run on most Pocket PC's and Phones with a built-in GPS receiver. The exception being Blackberry. Blackberry phones cannot run the Panama GPS map.

Once Garmin Mobile XT is installed on your Pocket PC or Phone, you can then install the Panama Street Map.

Factory Installed in-dash units
The only brand of in-dash GPS units that can run the Panama GPS Map are Kenwood. You may be able to purchase a Garmin GVN 53 black box adapter and suitable adapter interface from Peripheral Electronics and make the unit compatible with Garmin maps. This is generally an expensive method but if you want to use the Panama GPS Map in your built-in unit in your Lexus, Mercedes, BMW, Porsche etc., there is no other alternative at present. Only the car or unit manufacturer can supply maps for these devices unless the mentioned adapter kits are installed. No car manufacturer has a Panama map at this time.
